WRESTLING: Arsen Julfalakyan wins the first Gold Medal for Team Armenia in VilniusArsen Julfalakyan has earned the first Gold Medal for Team Armenia in the 74kg weight category (Greco-Roman) at the 2009 European Wrestling Championships in Vilnius, Lituania.![]() Julfalalkyan defeated Croatian and German opponents in the first couple of rounds, won over his Latvian opponent in the quarterfinals, and easily advanced to the finals with a victory over the wrestler from Belarus. In the final Julfalakyan was matched up with Volodimir Shatskykh of Ukraine, but Shatskykh would provide no challenge as Julfalakyan won the Gold without giving up a single point.
The Gold medal is the first for Team Armenia at the 2009 European Championships as the Greco-Roman wrestlers started their tournament in Vilnius, Lithuania. In the days' other action, Olympic Bronze medalist Roman Amoyan had victories over his opponents from Ukraine and Greece before losing to the Russian opponent in the quarterfinals in the 55kg category. At 60kg, Artak Harutyunyan lost to the eventual champion from Russia, and as a result would get a second chance to proceed in the repechage. Harutyunyan was successful against the French opponent in the first round of the Repechage, but would lose to the Romanian opponent in the second round. In the 66kg category, Khosrov Melikyan defeated his Serbian opponent in the first round, but would face a tough oppoenent representing Sweden. Sharur Vardanyan of Sweden would defeat Melikyan and would later win the Bronze medal for team Sweden. In tomorrow's Greco-Roman action, we will have Denis Forov in the 84kg category, Arman Geghamyan in the 96kg, and last year's Gold Medalist in the 120kg, Yuri Patrikeev to close out the tournament.
